Open-plan living will always be a popular option for home interiors, as it really helps to create a sense of space… but it can be quite tricky to get right if you’ve never done it before, so it pays to do as much research as you can and plan properly before you spend any money.

Before you do anything, you need to sit down and think about how you intend to use the space so you know it will fit in with your lifestyle. From there, you can decide on a budget and start thinking about the finer details, such as colour palettes, kitchen cabinets and other home decor items.

A key point to bear in mind with any design project of this kind is how you intend to zone the different parts of the space. Each zone in your open-plan area will be dedicated to a particular task but they need to work well together and complement each other in order for you to end up with a working design.

Also think about how you want to define these different zones. One of the most popular ways of doing this is to add in a kitchen island so you can keep this part of the room separate from dining and living areas.

Or you could achieve something similar by changing the flooring in different zones so the space looks divided but still open and airy. You can use tiles to great advantage here or, if you’re working to a tight budget, investing in rugs can really help make a difference in this regard.
