When you are choosing interior furnishings, the window dressings might not be uppermost in your mind, and yet they can help to set the tone of the whole room, and indeed, house. Not only that, a good choice can keep the house warmer and save on energy bills. Here are a few points to bear in mind if you are thinking of updating your window dressings this year.
Curtains, shutters, or blinds?
The first consideration here will be practical; blinds and shutters are the obvious choice for damp humid spaces such as the kitchen and bathroom. Choose a water-resistant material, such as faux wood venetian blinds, or a roller blind that is designed for damp conditions, and can easily be wiped clean.
The bedroom is also a space that may benefit from blackout blinds, especially if you are a light sleeper, or find yourself waking too early on light summer mornings. If you want the softness of draped fabric in your bedroom, you can always add some voile curtains in a colour or pattern that complements the rest of the décor.
What size window is it for?
Larger windows may suit some good quality curtains that add softness and texture to the room. Alternatively, wooden shutters add a classic elegance, especially in period homes, while allowing you to control light and privacy levels to a greater degree.
Small windows, where you want to maximise the amount of light that is let into the room, may benefit more from a roller blind that sits above the window during the daytime.
How will they fit in with the rest of the décor?
More often than not, we choose the window dressings after the rest of the décor is in place. If this is the case, think about the overall look and feel of the room, and how your choice will work with this; do you want them to draw the eye, or blend in?
