June is a favourite month of the year for many people – and not just those sitting down to watch Wimbledon with a bowl of strawberries and cream.

The month is not just the start of summer in meteorological terms, but also provides the longest daylight hours of all, with the summer solstice taking place on June 21st.

However, when you are indoors may feel your home is not getting enough light. It may be fine outdoors, but often a home can be too shadowy, even in summer. Could better interior design help Buckinghamshire homeowners maximise natural light?

The answer has to be an emphatic yes. There are many steps you can take to make your inside look lighter.

Fitting a skylight is an obvious step forward, especially in bungalows, or in upstairs rooms where you may have a sloping ceiling. This is perfect for capturing the light directly when the summer sun is high on the sky.

However, there are other steps that will help your home look lighter at any time of year. Mirrors and white paint are great at reflecting light, especially in rooms with smaller windows and lower ceilings.

Indeed, your interior design can focus on light colours everywhere, while enlarging windows where possible is also a great way of getting more light in.

A key point to remember is that while a skylight is great in summer, the sun will be lower in winter and that is when you need to do more to make the most of what little light there is.

In addition, you may need to tackle external blockages outside the home, such as any trees or hedges on your property that block out the light.

By taking the right steps, you van not only keep your home looking wonderfully light in summer, but make the most of the scarce illumination on offer a few months from now.
