In terms of interior design trends in the somewhat topsy-turvy year of 2020, the most beloved and desired by home buyers is the modern, simple yet striking style of Scandinavian interior design.
Its use of warm textures contrasting with clean simplicity has made it hugely popular, helping to create a calm space in a year where there hasn’t been any.
It is no surprise then, that when Bankrate, a mortgage comparison website, calculated the average house prices for popular interior design styles that Scandi-style was the clear winner, boosting the value of homes by over £300,000 (data presented by House Beautiful).
What makes Scandinavian style so popular among designers and home buyers alike? It all comes down to one simple word: hygge.
Hygge
In Norwegian, but especially in Danish culture, hygge is a central aspect of cultural identity. It roughly translates to a few concepts, including “comfort”, “joy”, “everyday togetherness” and “cosiness”.
Generally, when hygge is used in Denmark it is specifically referring to creating atmospheres that promote wellbeing and a feeling of cosiness and safety. Essentially, it is about sparking joy.
Whilst the concept has shaped Scandanavian interior design since the 20th Century, it became hugely popular internationally in 2016 and 2017, helped by the release of several books that focussed on hygge as both an interior design concept and a lifestyle.
Bringing Hygge Home
Embracing the style of embracing comfort is an exceptionally liberating trend, and so long as you follow a few important design tips, you will be well on your way to a comfortable and happier living space.
Minimalism is a key part of Scandanavian style, so the first step to any hygge home is decluttering. Less is so much more, so the key to any design is ensuring your colour scheme is filled with neutral colours to make your other design decisions so much more impactful.

Lightness is a vital part of any hygge space, as a bright space is an inviting one. To achieve this, ensure that your window treatments do not inadvertently block light in the room and make it feel less open.
As well as this, make sure your lighting is bright and adequate for the room space to maintain that bright atmosphere in the evening.
When adding furniture to a room in a Scandinavian style, simplicity is key. Function is as important as form, and so clean lines should be a major element to your design. A few modern curves and smooth edges help to make a room feel unique and individual.
