Making decisions on how to renovate or decorate your home can become a stressful experience. You want to find a style that reflects who you are as a person, and look amazing. But most people are not hardwired to know the differences between chic and contemporary, retro and vintage, or even between Gingham Green and Belwort Green.
But when looking for inspiration, there is a wealth of inspiration at our fingertips. We all have access to a wealth of films on TV, cinemas, and streaming services, where experts in interior design help create the most beautiful and awesome sets. Maybe you like the industrial cyberpunk vibe of Blade Runner, or perhaps you fell in love with the styling of Wes Anderson’s work.
To show that inspiration can come from anywhere, we have a look at three rather different films that featured incredible interiors.
1. The Great Gatsby
Whether you watch the 1974 version with Robert Redford, or the 2013 Leonardo DiCaprio film, both are fantastic adaptations of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic love story. The films are filled to the brim with luxury interior design ideas from the 1920s that make you wish you were drinking martinis on Long Island.
For the 2013 Baz Luhrmann film, set designer Catherine Martin brought the period to life while allowing her contemporary spirit to thrive. The extravagant sets and gorgeous dresses provided an awe-inspiring view into the past that will certainly provide you with stylish interior design inspo.
2. Gone Girl
This 2014 ‘did he or didn’t he’ thriller starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, and Neil Patrick Harris is packed full of twists and turns, and it also boasts an impressive selection of houses that feature impressive and popular interior design innovations.
The set designer, Donald Graham Burt, said that he was most impressed with Margo’s apartment, due to its rather mundane approach, which fit some of the scenes perfectly. Similarly, the elegant and spacious apartment of Neil Patrick Harris’ Desi Collings offered simple, yet luxury mansion features which can inspire great interior design ideas for your own house.
3. A Clockwork Orange
Widely regarded as a cult classic, the 1971 dystopian novel by Anthony Burgess was adapted by auteur Stanley Kubrick, who is well known for his elaborately designed sets.
Kubrick banned the movie a year after its release due to a spate of copycat violence that troubled the famous director enough to pull it from British screens for neat 27 years. However, controversy shouldn’t be the only reason to seek this film out if you have not watched it.
As with all of Kubrick’s films, the sets are as much of a star of the films as the actors and characters they play. The Korova Milk Bar on its own shows how unique the set designers were in their ideas. It is one of those films that you must see to believe.
